Can I give up my U.S citizenship to become a Filipina Citizen or do I have to be married to a filipina?

  • Rigo posted: 30 May at 9:04 pm

You can claim Filipino citizenship while keeping your American one, in fact it’s better if you do. Renouncing your US citizen ship will mean you won’t have the right to be on US soil as one anymore, regardless of your birth.

But citizenship takes years, and you likely won’t be able to apply for it until you’ve been a permanent resident for a while. Might want to start by contacting your local Philippine embassy first.

why dont u keep both citienships. from what i hear from ppl, u can go there on vacation and bribe those officials to give u citizenship. better yet would be to find any girl there and marry her for the mutual interest.

……if you marry a filipina, you’re still a US citizen. It is allowed here in the Philippines to marry foreigners but it doesnt mean you are automatically been converted to Filipino…..

Oh God. Never ever think again like that. Never Ever.

You can only entitled to be a naturalized Filipino Citizen only if, you are a former Filipino, who lost citizenship due to naturalization to another state.

If your spouse is a Filipino citizen, you can apply for naturalization for Citizenship but this will take years and it will be burdensome, not to mention, costly.

The Philippines does not encourage naturalization by foreigners to become Filipino citizens. In fact, there is a quota yearly in admitting aliens to be Filipino citizens. Only 50,000 people yearly.

You may become a Philippine Permanent Resident by virtue of any business, retirement or marriage to a Filipino citizen. The road to naturalization here is too winding road, in fact discouraged by the law on naturalization itself. The Philippines is not open for alien naturalization to become Filipinos, except on reasons stated above.

It is not true that there is no advantage of becoming a Filiipino citizen. Many of Filipino Chinese, or Filipino Indians, obtain Filipino citizenship because they own properties and big businesses here…

If your not a Filipino Race you cannot obtain both citizenship. You have to give up being a US citizen to become Filipino Citizen. I dont know why people think that anybody can just get DUAL CITIZENSHIP in the Philippines..

    DUAL CITIZESHIP:
    1. What is the Citizenship Retention and Re-acquisition Act of 2003 ?
Republic Act No. 9225 or the Citizenship Retention and Re-acquisition Act of 2003 is a law passed on 29 August 2003 which grants natural-born Filipinos who have lost their Filipino citizenship through naturalization in a foreign country, the opportunity to retain or re-acquire their Philippine citizenship.
    2. Who is qualified to reacquire/retain their Philippine citizenship under this law?
Under the law, only natural-born citizens of the Philippines who have lost their Philippine citizenship by reason of their naturalization as citizens of a foreign country may be deemed to have re-acquired Philippine citizenship upon taking the oath of allegiance to the Republic.
    3. Who are natural-born citizens of the Philippines?
Natural-born citizens of the Philippines are those who are citizens of the Philippines from birth without having to perform any act to acquire or perfect their Philippine citizenship. These are:
Those whose fathers or mothers are citizens of the Philippines at the time
of their birth; and Those born before January 17, 1973, of Filipino mothers, who elect Philippine citizenship upon reaching the age of majority.

It seems odd to typical Filipinos that you are willing to give up your US citizenship and become a Filipino citizen. But I think that is a noble idea and shows your love of our country.

  • TuSK posted: 14 Jun at 7:45 pm

have you been to the Philippines and lived there for a long period of time? If you haven’t then you don’t know what corruption is… if you actually believe that the US is as corrupt as the Philippines… well… stop deluding yourself. if you dislike the US government, you’ll be scared shitless or just pissed off towards the politics in the Philippines.

for a westerner, the Philippines is a great place to stay if your earning a western salary, have friends to go out to parties and connections to help you get out of trouble or just to name drop…

Is this an indictment of the US more than praise for the Philippines? If so I can understand. Keep in mind the US will tax you hard even if you leave the country(what an evil law) and I believe they punitively tax you if you renounce citizenship, but I am unsure.Check with the state dept. If you have a pension or regular funds you can marry a Filipina, pay some punitive penalty and tell the US goodbye. After all, it is on path to become a third world nation by 2050 anyway.
